In the words of the Project’s creator, Dr. Danziger, “Never, ever attempt to alter time and happenings, no matter how seemingly insignificant. That being said, the first chapter of the book is somewhat a harbinger of the novel’s ending; an ending with a huge twist.
Si Morley returns from 1887 to his original present 20th century time. Things are not as he had hoped, whatsoever, regarding the original project of time travel. Eventually he is encouraged to return, for a time, to 1911-1912 New York City instead of returning to the late 19th century; a time in which he chose earlier to spend his life. In 1912, should he change the past or leave it be regarding WW1?
Some characters are familiar and return from the first book; some are new to the new era chosen. Pay particular attention to the “Jotta Girl.”
The novel is written with the same painstaking description as its predecessor, “Time and Again.” The beginning chapters are very good and attention grabbing. The closing chapters, the same. In particular one huge twist, which I doubt anyone will see coming.
Unfortunately, the middle section of the book is rife with description; maybe too much so. There is just so much spent on social graces, plays, vaudeville, etc. Much of it not really necessary.
However, there is enough intrigue to grab your attention in the first and last third sections.
Had Mr. Finney lived, I have a feeling this would have been a trilogy, rather than a two book series. Mind you, these two books had a span of 25 years from the original to the sequel.
“Time and Again” was outstanding, The sequel is very good. Neither is about time travel. It is time travel.

From Time to Time Jack Finney Books Reviews
This book is a sequel to his 1970 novel "Time and Again". It is definitely not up to that standard, it is just an "OK" historical fiction/time travel book. As far as that goes, it is really more historical fiction than time travel, since the time travel aspect in this book is very muted (although there is a bit of a surprise involving time travel with one of the characters). Almost all of the action takes place in 1912 New York City. There are extended portions of the book (whole chapters) that are merely descriptions of the environment - for example, one chapter is devoted to describing, almost scene-by-scene, a play that the main character is watching in 1912 NY. In a word - BORING! There is very little plot, and what there is of it, isn't really resolved satisfactorily. Not at all like in "Time and Again". Additionally, it is not really a stand-alone story, even for a sequel. If you didn't read "Time and Again", I don't think this story would make much sense to you. Overall, I'm glad I read it as a follow-on story, but it was disappointing.
This was a great disappointment after reading Finney's first book, Time and Again. I really struggled through this one. No suspense. No surprises. I felt as if Finney went to the New York Public Library, looked up a bunch of historical data, and wrote a story around it. The long chapters of boring dialogue had me just skipping over it so I could get to some meat rather than filler of fluff. I gave high ratings for Time and Again, but as for From Time to Time--I could have used my time more wisely by leaving this one on the shelf.
I am a huge fan of time travel fiction, with Finney's Time and Again ranking as my favourite book of all time; therefore, I'm more than a bit biased.
The first novel was such a complete story, that I almost dreaded the idea of revisiting the characters. Who hasn't experienced the disappointment of an author going back to the well one too many times, diminishing their work with each new volume? Not the case here at all; in fact, I was startling surprised with the direction the book took, and more than pleasantly surprised with the plot-line (no spoilers here).
I will admit that on my first reading, some of the foundational work in the middle of the book seemed a little much; however, having read the novel a few more times (which you'll want to as well), I am ever more appreciative of just how much work the author put into really knowing the era he wrote about. If you let yourself become immersed in the story, the time period vividly comes to life in a way most novels only aspire to.
Read in order 1 - Time and Again, 2 - From Time To Time, these works stand out not just for the time travel exploration, but in the art of storytelling.
Nearly as good as the first book. Superbly researched, and written with love for times past. But a bit rambling, and the timeline mixed up. Time and again plays in 1970, and the copyright is also 1970, but it is almost certainly, I think, written some years earlier. This is 4 years later, ie 1974, but supposedly "at the end of the century", which is supported by the details, eg computer much more modern than 1974. Annoying. Mr Finney obviously has a love affair with vaudeville, and describes that, but I would rather have had more Titanic and a longer ending - we are left hanging, and unfortunately there is no third book. Still, a masterpiece, and what a lovely idea; a time travel science fiction novel with photographs!
A lovely time travel novel, centered around 3 periods in New York. The oldest is set in the 1880's, the second and most important is just prior to WWI, the target period. The third is roughly the 1960's, the present time when it was first written, and from where it is driven.. It has some wonderful old photographs, which were in-depth researched from various library archives, and which give the settings for the two older periods. The novel moves at a slower pace as it delightfully and fairly convincingly describes what life was like in this great city during these periods and masterfully sets sets the scene as it builds up to an incredible climax to show why time must not be tampered with, if time travel were possible.
Even today it would make a wonderful script for a movie. Someone should point it out to Steven Spielberg!!
