Even though the last plane has landed and the lights of Windshift Inn have been extinguished, the four women of Windshift - Shirley, Mags, Delores and Emmie - continue to fly through my thoughts. Amazingly, each woman had the same middle name - Adversity. Mr. Prejudice was omnipresent in their lives. Each woman had her own unique, effective style in dealing with the prejudice and bias that were a part of the American culture in the 1940s.The four women were courageous pioneers in the world of women's aviation and the author weaves their stories into one that draws the reader into the challenges each faced. (Challenges that I believe have not been completely erased from American culture.) What these four women faced in interacting with those who resented their being Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs) is somewhat amazing. How long ago were these attitudes prevalent in America? Not so long ago. This book is set in the 1940s.
These trailblazers will be emblazoned into the heart and mind of the reader. It was very difficult to believe that this was a work of fiction and it was hard to close my kindle once I got into this story. The story will stay with you long after you stop reading. Joyce Faulkner spins yarn and weaves it into a memorable tapestry. This book is historical fiction at its best!!

This is an extremely well written book about the women pilots who ferried Army Air Corps airplanes throughout the United States during WWII. Excellent character development and plot line. This is a must read for anyone interested in the history of WWII or the Army Air Corps, and I recommend it to everyone who simply enjoys a good book!
Actually knowing one of these courageous women, I was really interested in what this novel showed of what they went through just to do their jobs.
This book takes a well know period in the history of our country and sheds new light on it through the eyes of four young women, who are also members of the WASPS. What these women faced in service to our country is nothing but courageous! The author, Joyce Faulkner, has wonderfully managed to convey this and, at this same time, educate us on the barely known contributions of the WASPS during WWII.
I especially like the newspaper headlines beginning each chapter and those at the end.
Joyce Faulknew has such a gift for spotting a good story. She does a lot of research when she first hears about the story, then she writes it as historic fiction. I loved this "story" about the first women pilots who later became known as the WASPS. Can't wait for the next story - Vala's Bed.
Sandy
I'm far enough into the book to say that I really like it. Each of the main characters has her (or his) own distinct personality. The first-person narrator is interesting because she reminds me of me--somewhat compulsive. Very well written. Can't recall finding any typos or grammatical/punctuation errors.
Telling the stories of the female pilots who honored our country with their service during WWII, Windshift is an emotional flight in an aerobatic aircraft. It was hammerheads, tail spins, rolls and dives for the experienced flyer- a true joy to read. For the inexperienced, it is so well written, you may just take up flying. But, overall, and seriously shared, the trials and hard roads these women blazed for all military women serving today deserves recognition and this book does an excellent job of making it known.
The PTSD Retreat
I had a hard time believing this book was not a biography of four actual women, because it was so real. Joyce Faulkner is one of my favorite authors; she writes like no other. Just when you think she cannot outdo herself one more time (I loved "In the Shadow of Suribachi," "Chance," and the inimitable "Username") she does it again with Windshift. This well-crafted novel with many layers is based on historical fact -- women pilots serving as WASPS during WWII. Each of Joyce Faulkner's characters is separate and distinct, showing that there were many types of women attracted to serving her country in this capacity and simply enjoying the daring quality of flying. The names of the characters fit their personalities -- Shirley, the good girl who has trauma in her past and present life to overcome; Delores, the femme-fatale; Emmie, the country girl who got her start with crop-dusting, and Mags, the mover and shaker. The story captures the world of the 40's, with the war, the prejudices of the time, and a particular illness that ravaged our country. I especially liked the ending that showed what happened to those who survived.
